Requirements of training leading to qualification

We want to be inclusive in our approach and encourage a development and growth mindset in all our members whilst promoting the reputation of the profession. We require certain criteria to be met in relation to the types training undertaken when seeking to be recognised as a Qualified Coaching Supervisor whilst recognising the growth of Coaching Supervision training provision and the variety of learning routes that aspiring Coaching Supervisors may take. We allow a status of being in training for up to four years to recognise that people will need to take into account life circumstances and financial constraints in planning their qualification and consider 4 years as an appropriate length of time to meet the relevant criteria of qualification.

With this in mind, whilst we have a list of Training Providers that we recognise as providing courses sufficient to recognise the status of being a Qualified Coaching Supervisor we also set out below the criteria we apply in order to recognise new and emerging learning provision.

Adequate training provision prepares the Coaching Supervisor to focus on the internal processes of the coach and on the contexts and perspectives within which the coach is operating, and how the coach is co-constructing their approach and their practice with their clients and stakeholders. The focus of the programme needs to be specifically on the supervision of coaching as opposed to other disciplines.

  • It needs to cover the functions of Coaching Supervision, what it is for and how it has its effect.
  • It needs to cover the Industry level contextual pieces, such as ethical codes, regional norms and regulation and the competencies expected.
  • It needs to cover the relevant approaches and up to date models of supervision, including both psychological, relational and systemic aspects. Other areas such as Neuroscience and Quantum psychology and Mindfulness are beneficial.
  • It needs to include the modern skillset of working, such as additional CoachTech, Creative Tools and working modes such as Gestalt or ACT...
  • It needs to give time for observed application of these models with experienced tutor feedback in a developmental frame that models supervision processes. Peer feedback can also enhance the above.
  • There needs to be time applying the practice to clients and reflecting on the practice, and synthesizing learning into a congruent approach that can be described to potential clients.

Because of the above requirements, we anticipate it will take in the region of 100+ hours of time investment and over an appropriate time period to allow application and reflection. (as a rule of thumb we expect this could be over a total period of least 6 months).

The provider will be recognised by professional bodies as a credible source of learning directly on Coaching Supervision, by which we refer to it having a faculty of Accredited Supervisors, or at least, Qualified Supervisors who have several years of regularly supervised experience since qualification that they can draw upon.
