We are excited to invite you to our Annual Coaching & Mentoring Research Conference. This one-day event showcases research conducted by Masters and Doctoral students in the International Centre for Coaching and Mentoring Studies, as well as guest speakers from other Universities.
Our conference is of interest to all practitioners, academics and students of coaching and mentoring. Every year it attracts a wide variety of practitioners and researchers and hosts internationally acclaimed coaches and coaching researchers as keynote speakers.
Andrew is an Australian-born executive coach and psychologist with a background experience in brief approaches to change, employee assistance programs (EAPs) and corporate mental health. Having coined and published the term ‘coaching hypnosis’ (2009), he is regarded as an international authority on the applications of mental training, suggestive communication & self-regulation in corporate and coaching contexts. He is a founding member of the International Society for Coaching Psychology, an advisor to the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine and to the National Network of Workplace Health Promotion. He is in an award-winning author and his latest contribution is to the recently launched book “The Practitioner’s Handbook of Team Coaching” published by Routledge. He is happy to announce that Open University Press will be publishing his book on “Brief Strategic Coaching” in 2020.
The strategic perspective focuses on how clients mishandle their problems and misapply solutions. This presentation will address the implications of these repetitively unsuccessful attempts to solve dilemmas and difficulties. We will start by describing general ways of mishandling problems. Next, we will present strategies that coaches can implement to assess and interrupt faulty solution patterns. We will then proceed to discuss how the helping efforts of a coach may inadvertently contribute to problem maintenance and we’ll finish on the need for strategic reflection.
Pauline is an educator and researcher in Management with a focus on leadership development and specifically coaching. For the past 15 years, she has critically explored the dynamics and processes in coaching, with an interest in power, ethics and paradoxes. Her latest publications include “Complex Situation in Coaching. A Critical Case Based Approach” as well as “The Coaching Space: A Production of Power Dynamics within organizational settings”, Organization, 2018 (both with Dima Louis) and “Ethics as a Fabric: An Emotional Reflexive Sensemaking Process”, Business Ethics Quarterly, 2019 (with Jean Nizet). She has international experience in France, the USA, Colombia and graduated with a PhD in Management from HEC Paris, and a Research Master in Sociology of Power from U. Paris Diderot.
Building on empirical research, this presentation will address the political implications of our approaches to dilemmas, using the context of ethical conflicts. First, we will expose typical ethical dilemmas faced by coaches. Next, we will present different political strategies that coaches adopt to manage dilemmas, and discuss their related implications for coaches and clients. Finally, we will discuss how the interplay between emotions and reflexivity (self-reflexivity and critical reflexivity) can support or hinder this political management of dilemmas.
